Pagan Spirit

Pagan Spirit

What is the pagan spirit? The actual word "pagan" is derived from Latin, and refers to someone from the country. The word did not take on religious or spiritual overtones until approximately the 17th century.

Paganism can mean different things to different people, but here are some of the most basic beliefs. In its simplest form, paganism focuses spiritual beliefs on nature and the earth.

Pagans believe that all life is interconnected, and that there are elements of divinity in the natural world. The earth itself is considered sacred, and the turning of each season is treated with great respect, and often celebrated with a holiday.

Paganism is not an organized religion with one common set of beliefs. There is no Bible, Torah or Koran.

Paganism can incorporate many gods and goddesses, often considering them to be facets of a larger spiritual Whole. Some pagans may choose to recognize existing gods and goddesses from older cultures, while others worship a more generalized earth-spirit as the primary divinity. A central tenet of paganism is, "If it hurts none, do as you will."

With its emphasis on respect for the natural world and its strong tradition of gender equality, the pagan spirit is well suited to modern times.
